Howard Government's Review of Junior Pay Rates Spells Trouble for Young Workers
The Howard Government's review of pay rates for young workers and trainees announced this week has been met with great concern by the AWU. It is feared that it is an indication that the Coalition intend to further strip back pay and conditions for workers if they win the next election.
The announcement of a review of junior pay rates comes after the NSW Government found workers aged under 18 were underpaid more than $45,000 by the Chilli's restaurant chain who had used Workchoices to exploit its young employees.
Adding to the union's concern is the number of cases of young workers being exploited at work that have been reported in the media. These have included:
- Young workers underpaid more than $12,000 by an actor starring in the Government's Workchoices advertising, who also ran a painting business
- Trolley collectors in South Australia underpaid by more than $250,000
- Workers in cafes and take-away outlets in Victoria found to have been underpaid
An AWU spokesperson has reacted to the news of the Government's pay rates review by saying that it proves that the Government has failed young workers by continuing to strip away their rights at work.
"Young workers and trainees have a clear choice to make at the upcoming federal election-they can either vote for a forward thinking, Labor Government that will give their rights at work the priority they deserve, or for a tired Coalition Government that clearly wants to strip back their pay and conditions to the bare bones".
