Little hospitals make big difference

While it has been the big hospitals getting the attention, the smaller hospitals have been playing their part in this year’s collective bargaining campaign. Australian Workers Union members in smaller hospitals such as Jandowae, Chinchilla, Miles, Warwick, Dalby, Stanthorpe and Oakey have also been putting on work bans, but you might not have heard about it.

The fact is that these smaller hospitals, some in out of the way places, have been just as involved in this year’s campaign as the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and the Princess Alexandria Hospital.

These workers have put on work bans; some examples being, no removal of rubbish from administration offices or management areas, no emptying general waste bins or changing bed linen in quarters or no functions catered for in all areas of the Health Service.

The list of bans might not be quite as long as those in metropolitan hospitals, but they are just as important in sending the message to the Queensland Government that AWU members are serious about all Queenslanders getting the best quality health care.

AWU delegate, David Bradford at Chinchilla Hospital said workers at the hospital were proud to play a part in the campaign.

Whilst Diana Mahnkopf, AWU Delegate at Dalby Hospital said, “We don’t get as much attention as the big metropolitan hospitals, but we’re just as involved in the campaign. Our list of work bans might be smaller, but our commitment to getting the best health system for all Queenslander is just as big.”
